Training Day (2001)

Movie Review

Directed by: Antoine Fuqua

Starring: Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, and Eva Mendes

Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) is a rookie in the LAPD who gets his first real experience on the streets with Detective Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington).  Hoyt is a very straight arrow and is not a fan of Harris’ brand of justice.  He lets vigilante justice rule the streets.  As the notions of right and wrong become more and more vague to Jake, he starts to wonder about his mentor’s code of conduct and whether this lesson about the streets is more than what meets the eye.

While not Denzel Washington’s finest film, Antoine Fuqua’s Training Day lets him shine.  Denzel Washington electrifies the big screen as the reprehensible Detective Harris.  His performance will mesmerize you, and he shows why he is such a legendary actor.  In addition to a great performance from Washington, Fuqua brings some great filmmaking to the film.  With its many twists and turns, Training Day is easily one of the most suspenseful crime thrillers in recent film history.
